How to Plan the Best 2-Week California Road Trip

Like everything in America, California is big and it has a LOT to offer! Think bustling cities, epic national parks, charming coastal towns, and iconic highways.

I’m going to be honest: this 2 week California road trip itinerary is jam-packed. It’s not for those who want a slow, relaxing vacation. But if you’re short on time and want to see as much as possible in two weeks, this is the road trip for you!

Best Way to Get Around California

This is a California road trip itinerary, so a car is essential.

When renting a car, here are some tips that everyone should know before going:

  • Choose gas over electric: Some stretches have few gas stations or charging points in between. A car with a strong driving range is ideal so you never have to worry about running out of gas. Plus, gas is very expensive in California, especially near all the National Parks. A longer range will help you to avoid fueling at the most expensive places…
  • Opt for a hidden trunk: Smash-and-grab thefts are common in big cities like San Francisco or Los Angeles. Don’t tempt fate with visible luggage!

Pro tip: If you’re starting in San Francisco as this itinerary suggests, don’t rent your car until the last day there. Walk, use Ubers or public transit instead. That way you’ll avoid parking headaches, theft risks and save money!

Best Time to Visit California

California might have a sunny reputation, but it’s not always beach weather.

  • Northern California (San Francisco, Bay Area) is known for foggy, chilly summers.
  • Southern California (LA, San Diego) has more consistent sunshine.

I went in July and our experience was mixed. The crowds were intense and the temperature was very high in Southern California, but windy and cold in San Francisco! If you can, go in September or October. You’ll get more pleasant weather across the board plus you’ll avoid the peak-season chaos.

Why This Itinerary is Unique

Sure, there are tons of California itineraries online. But this one? It’s special.

It squeezes in:

  • Napa Valley wine country
  • Lake Tahoe’s alpine vibes
  • Yosemite National Park
  • The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH)
  • Santa Barbara & Malibu beaches
  • Los Angeles highlights
  • Las Vegas
  • Grand Canyon day trip

It’s very ambitious, but it you’ll truly get to experience all of California’s diversity. And that’s what makes it so unforgettable.

The Ultimate 2-Week California Road Trip Itinerary

Days 1–2: San Francisco

Top San Francisco attractions you shouldn’t miss:

  • Fisherman’s Wharf (you have to try the clam chowder in a sourdough bowl!)
  • Ghirardelli Square (treat yourself to the delicious sundae from Ghirardelli!!)
  • Ride the iconic cable car
  • Take a hop on hop off bus tour (the best way to see the most of the city!)
  • Walk along Embarcadero
  • Visit a Golden Gate Bridge viewpoint (this can be done on the Hop on, Hop Off bus tour!)
  • Alamo Square & Painted Ladies
  • Visit Cow Hollow / Chestnut Street
  • Walk / Drive down Lombard Street
  • Explore Chinatown
  • North Beach & Coit Tower
  • Financial District
  • Union Square for shopping

If you like a go-go-go itinerary you’ll manage to fit in all of these things during two days 🙂

Optional extras:

  • Alcatraz
  • Sausalito ferry ride (we did this and it was super cute, if you like oysters there are tons of restaurants in Sausalito!)
  • Visit some of SF’s many museums…

Where to stay: 100% stay near the Fisherman’s Wharf area, it’s safe, walkable, and full of restaurants.

Day 3: Napa Valley

Pick up your rental car (as early as possible!!) and drive to Napa for a day of wine, food, and scenic vineyards. The major rental car companies all have offices in the city center, so there’s no need to head to the airport to pick up your car!

Our Highlights:

  • Wine tastings at Beringer Vineyards,  V. Sattui (I highly recommend both of them!) or any other of the many vineyards
  • Have lunch in one of the quaint towns in the valley (we went to Yountville, super cute!)
  • Take pictures in front of the famous “Welcome to Napa Valley” sign

Pro tip: Book your wine tastings in advance as spaces are limited! Also make sure to start with the winery of choice that is farthest into the valley, and work your way back to avoid getting stuck in traffic at the end of the day.

Important to know: Some wineries don’t allow children under the age of 18 on their property! If you’re traveling with underage children, make sure you check the vineyard’s requirements on their website!

Where to stay: Drive on to South Lake Tahoe (3 hrs) and catch the sunset over the lake. To reach Tahoe for sunset you should leave Napa at around 3-4 pm!

Day 4: Lake Tahoe

Start your day early (ideally at or before 9 am), because parking fills up fast! We saw the police handing out tickets for cars that have parked in non-parking areas, so it’s really worth getting there early to secure a legal parking spot.

Things to do during your One Day in South Lake Tahoe:

  • Hike Eagle Lake & Falls (1.5 hrs return, free parking at trailhead)
  • Emerald Bay Lookout
  • Hike down to Vikingsholm Beach & take a swim if you dare (the water was ice-cold in late July!)
  • Rent a kayak or SUP
  • Stroll through town—Tahoe cabins are super cute
  • Mini golf at Magic Carpet Golf (we loved it haha!)

Where to stay: You’ll spend the night at Lee Vining, which is right outside the entry to Yosemite National Park. The drive there takes approx. 2 hours. You should depart from Lake Tahoe around 5-6 pm to get there before dark 🙂

Day 5: Yosemite National Park

Bright and early (ideally around 6am) you’ll make your way from Lee Vining over the Tioga Pass into the Yosemite Valley. The drive takes around 2 hours, which should give you an arrival time of around 8 am, which will likely beat the majority of the crowds.

Parking in Yosemite during the summer months can be difficult!! I recommend to leave your car in one of the designated parking lots and then use the free shuttle bus to get around.

Must See Yosemite highlights in One Day:

  • Yosemite Falls Loop (approx. 45 mins)
  • Cook’s Meadow Loop (approx. 20 mins)
  • El Capitan viewpoint
  • Mist Trail hike to Vernal Falls (approx. 3 hrs, moderate)
  • Check out the visitor center for souvenirs
  • Tunnel View & Glacier Point Lookouts

Check out this One Day in Yosemite Itinerary for some more details and inspiration!

Where to stay: Spend the night in Mariposa (or any nearby town) to break up the drive to the coast the next day.

Day 6: Pacific Coast Highway (Part 1) – Monterey & Carmel

From wherever you spent the night (e.g. Mariposa), continue driving to the coast (approx. 3 hrs).

Must-dos:

  • Stroll through Carmel-by-the-Sea (check out this map here)
  • 17-Mile Drive (incl. Pebble Beach, Lone Cypress and sea lion viewpoint)
  • Monterey’s Cannery Row & Old Fisherman’s Wharf (there’s more seals here!)

Where to stay: Monterey (we liked staying near Cannery Row, which was also close to the Old Wharf).

Day 7: Pacific Coast Highway (Part 2) – Big Sur to Pismo Beach

Today the journey is the goal. You’ll want to slowly be making your way South along the Pacific Coast Highway, until you reach Pismo Beach.

Some stops along the way that you’ll love:

  • Bixby Creek Bridge
  • Stop at Café Kevah for ocean views + bites
  • Pfeiffer Beach & Big Sur
  • Rugged Point
  • Hearst Castle
  • Morro Bay
  • Pismo Beach

Important: Land slides and road blocks are not uncommen, especially after a harsh winter! Make sure to check the California Highway Conditions before starting your drive to avoid disappointments…

Where to stay: Anywhere along the PCH, but Pismo is a good ending point for the day.

Day 8: Santa Barbara

Before driving all the way down to Santa Barbara, make a short detour to Solvang, a quirky Danish-style town. If you’re from Europe, you might find it a little touristy and a little kitsch, but it was a fun stop nevertheless!

Once you reach Santa Barbara, make sure to check out these Santa Barbara highlights:

  • Stearns Wharf
  • State Street (shopping & dining)
  • The Funk Zone (best at night!)
  • Arroyo Burro Beach
  • Drive around Hope Ranch (to see some fancy houses)
  • Drive around Montecito (and check out Coast Village for brunch)

Where to stay: Anywhere in central Santa Barbara, close to the beach and State Street is ideal.

Day 9: Malibu & Santa Monica

Today you’ll explore Malibu and Santa Monica!

My Must Do’s in Malibu:

  • Point Dume Beach (swim + relax)
  • Malibu Pier (lunch at Malibu Farm)
  • Malibu Country Mart
  • Drive past Pepperdine University

Must Do’s in Santa Monica:

  • Santa Monica Pier
  • Rent a bike and drive to Venice Beach (stop there to check out the skaters and roller bladers at the skate park!)
  • 3rd Street Promenade (shopping in Downtown Santa Monica)
  • Sunset on the beach

Where to stay: Since you’ll be spending a couple of days in LA choosing a central location is key for exploring all the different neighbourhoods. We liked having our base in Hollywood.

Days 10–11: Los Angeles

The highlights of our 2 days in LA (without Santa Monica, you already explored that the day before) were:

  • Hollywood Walk of Fame & Chinese Theatre (check out the imprints)
  • Bus tour around Hollywood and Downtown LA (LA is huge and not very walkable, so this is a very convenient way to get around and learn something along the way!)
  • Warner Bros. Studio Tour (as a Friends Stan this is A MUST)
  • Griffith Observatory
  • Hike to the Hollywood Sign (approx. 2h)
  • Rodeo Drive (even if only for window shopping haha)
  • The Grove outdoor mall

Pro tip: LA traffic is brutal, avoid rush hours as much as you can!!

Days 12–13: Las Vegas

Time to head to your final stop: Fabulous Las Vegas!! The drive there should take around 5 hours. To avoid LA traffic, leave the city early in the morning!!

Shortly before arriving in Las Vegas you could do a small detour to visit Hoover Dam. Personally I thought it’s very fascinating and definitely worth a stop!

Las Vegas highlights:

  • Walk The Strip
  • Visit (and play) at some of the iconic casinos: Bellagio, Caesars, Venetian, etc…
  • Bellagio fountain show
  • Visit Fremont Street (more exciting at night)
  • Take a selfie at the Las Vegas sign
  • See a show or concert (we loved the show at The Sphere)

Where to stay: On The Strip for the full Vegas experience, or off-Strip for a quieter vibe.

Day 14: Grand Canyon Day Trip

End your trip with a Grand Canyon day tour from Las Vegas. It’s a long day (12+ hrs), so trust me and let a tour operator handle the driving.

What’s included:

  • Route 66 photo stops
  • 3 hrs at the South Rim (enough time to walk from Mather Point to Bright Angel Trailhead)
  • Grand Canyon Village
Grand Canyon

Final Thoughts

This California itinerary is packed to the brim, but it allows you to see so much in just two weeks! But just beware, the way the itinerary is set up there is not much space for error. If there is some unexpected event, it really might throw the whole plan off…

If you have extra time, these are some places where I would have loved to stay longer:

  • Add an extra day in Yosemite
  • Spend more time on the PCH (we didn’t get to see enough of Morro Bay for example)
  • Stay overnight at the Grand Canyon

But even in 14 days, you’ll experience the full magic of California — from vineyards to deserts, beaches to mountains. I’d do it again in a heartbeat, exactly like in the itinerary above 🙂
