Fronalpstock Hike: A Stunning Ridge Walk Just One Hour from Zurich
If you’re looking for one of the most beautiful hikes near Zurich, let me introduce you to the Fronalpstock hike. This panoramic ridge walk between Klingenstock and Fronalpstock is one of those trails with views making you say “wow” all along the way! And the best part? It’s only about an hour from Zurich.
The Journey Up to Stoos
One of the reasons this is considered one of the best hikes near Zurich is how easy it is to reach.
After about an hour’s drive from Zurich, you arrive at the valley station of the Stoosbahn. And here’s something fun: Stoos itself is car-free. So you leave your car behind (at the “Parkhaus Stoosbahn”) and take the incredibly steep funicular up the mountain.
If you’re going on the weekend, I’d recommend to get there no later than 10 am. Otherwise you might need to park your car somewhere further away.
If you’re arriving by public transport, you’ll need to get a train to “Schwyz” and then transfer to a bus and get out at the station “Schwyz, Stoosbahn”.
The cable car up to Stoos runs every half hour from 7 am to 7 pm, always at 10 past and 40 past.
If you have a Swiss Half Fare Card, or a Swiss General Pass the ticket will cost you 42 or 31 CHF, respectively. At full price a day ticket (including the chairlifts) costs 52 CHF. More on pricing on their official website.
Once you’re in Stoos
Once you reach Stoos, a small alpine village surrounded by peaks, you’ll walk a few minutes to the chairlifts (follow the signs). From here, you have two options: start at Klingenstock or Fronalpstock.
We chose to begin at Klingenstock, and I’d recommend you do the same!
Important things to note:
The Klingenstock chairlift runs from 9 am to 4 pm in the summer months. The Fronalpstock chairlift runs from 9 am to 5:30 pm in the summer.
Why Start at Klingenstock?
There are two ways to do the Fronalpstock hike:
- Klingenstock → Fronalpstock
- Fronalpstock → Klingenstock
While both are beautiful, starting at Klingenstock makes the hike easier.
If you look at the elevation profile of the hike you’ll see that the ridge goes up and down all the way. However, if you start in Klingenstock in general most of the trail gently rolls downhill, with only one major steep climb near the end.
In addition, finishing at Fronalpstock means you can reward yourself with a drink or snack at the mountain restaurant before heading down.
It also gives you more flexibility since the Fronalpstock chairlift runs longer in the afternoon — which means less stress about missing the last ride down.
If you’re looking for a challenge though, the other direction might be of interest to you. Just make sure to start bright and early in this case, because it will take longer! 🙂
Walking the Fronalpstock Ridge
The moment you step off the chairlift at Klingenstock, the views begin. To your left you’ll have views to one arm of Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee), framed by mountain peaks. Because this is a ridge walk, the path is very straightforward. There’s essentially one main trail guiding you along the crest of the mountain. You’ll walk up, then down, then up again at the end.
The hike itself is about 5 kilometers long, with around 300 meters of elevation gain. It’s not particularly long or strenuous, which makes it one of the most accessible alpine hikes near Zurich.
That being said, there is one major drawback to this hike: there is almost no shade!
We did this hike on one of the hottest days of summer, close to 30°C, and the sun was relentless. Beautiful, yes. But intense. If you can, choose a warm but not scorching day, or start early in the morning. Doing this hike in early to mid fall might also be a good option!
Along the way, you’ll find a few benches and picnic tables. They are the perfect spots to sit down, drink some water, and just take in the scenery. Because this is a relatively short hike, you don’t have to rush at all.

Who Is This Hike For?
One of the reasons the Fronalpstock hike ranks among the best hikes near Zurich is its accessibility.
It’s ideal for:
- Beginner hikers
- Visitors who want a classic Swiss mountain experience
- Couples
- Groups of friends
- Families with older children
There’s some up and down throughout, and one steeper section near Fronalpstock, but if you take your time, it’s very manageable.
Because it’s a ridge trail with exposure on both sides, I wouldn’t recommend it for very small children unless they’re closely supervised 🙂
Best Time to Do the Fronalpstock Hike
The Fronalpstock hike is best done between June and October, when the trail is snow-free and the chairlifts are running.
Because this is a ridge walk, there is almost no shade along the trail. On sunny days, the heat can feel intense, especially in July and August. We did this hike on a nearly 30°C day, and while the views were spectacular, the sun was almost unbearable.
If possible, choose:
- A clear day for the best lake views
- A warm but not extremely hot day
- An early morning start during peak summer
- Visit in early to mid fall
If I would go back I’d probably go in September, when the temperatures are slightly cooler and the air is crisper (should lead to even better views!), making it truly one of the most enjoyable hikes near Zurich.
What to Bring
Even though this is a relatively short hike, you’re still in the mountains. Come prepared.
You’ll definitely want:
- Proper hiking shoes
- Plenty of water (at least 1 liter — you can’t refill along the trail)
- Sunscreen (sweatproof) and a hat
- Sunglasses
- Snacks and a small lunch (there’s no food along the way!)
- Hiking poles (if you have some)
- Backpack with side pockets (for easy water access)
- Lightweight clothes / layers (it can be cool in the morning and then very hot at noon)
- Always good to have: tissues, hand sanitizer, pocket knife, small first aid kit
There’s “civilization” at both ends of the trail, but once you’re on the ridge, it’s just you and the mountains.
Final Thoughts – Is the Fronalpstock Hike Worth It?

If you’re searching for scenic hikes near Zurich that don’t require extreme fitness, complicated logistics, or an overnight stay, this is one of the best options you’ll find.

And it feels like a true Swiss alpine experience without the remoteness.
The Fronalpstock hike is proof that you don’t need to go deep into the Alps to find breathtaking mountain views. Sometimes, they’re just one hour away from Zurich.
