How to Choose the Perfect Maldives Resort: A Complete Travel Guide
The Maldives are truly a slice of paradise! For many travelers, visiting the Maldives is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, which naturally comes with high expectations. Choosing the right resort can feel overwhelming — especially with hundreds of islands and resorts to choose from!
In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to consider before booking your Maldives accommodation!
Your Complete Guide to Picking the Best Maldives Resort
1. Set Your Budget
Price is often the first thing you need to consider when choosing a Maldives resort. Options range from affordable guesthouses on local islands to ultra-luxurious private resorts that cost more than a year’s salary for most people.
The Maldives is generally not a budget-friendly destination, especially if you’re seeking a resort island escape. If you’re booking on platforms like Booking.com, set your price range early — this helps to manage expectations and prevents you from overspending.
Questions to ask yourself:
- How much am I willing to spend per night?
- Am I comfortable splurging on a once-in-a-lifetime luxury experience?
Pro tip: Consider local island guesthouses if you want to save money without missing out on the Maldivian vibe.
2. Watch Out for Hidden Costs
This is crucial! Many Maldives resorts are on private islands, which means transportation often costs extra. Depending on the location, you might need a speedboat, (private, resort-organized) seaplane, or a domestic flight. Prices for transfers can range from $80 to $500 USD for a roundtrip. Special dates like Christmas or New Year’s may also include compulsory fees for celebratory dinners. To avoid unpleasant surprises, always check the fine print before booking any accommodation!
Questions to ask yourself:
- How much will transportation cost?
- Are there additional compulsory fees listed in the fine print?

3. Consider Dining Options
Meal plans vary greatly between resorts. Some resorts have a single main restaurant, usually buffet-style, while others have multiple restaurants offering different cuisines. Think about how much variety matters to you.
Questions to ask yourself:
- Am I fine dining in one restaurant, or do I want multiple options?
- Do I have dietary preferences that require more variety?

4. All-Inclusive Packages
Most Maldives resorts offer all-inclusive options. Before commiting to a package, always confirm what is actually included in the package: sometimes it’s only local liquors, limited cocktails, or specific bars and hours.
All-inclusive can be convenient and fun, but it’s not always cost-effective. For example, my partner and I chose all-inclusive, but we didn’t come close to “breaking even” on the drinks we consumed.
Questions to ask yourself:
- Is an all-inclusive package worth it financially for your drinking habits?
- Are your drinks of choice actually included in the package?
- Do I prefer paying for an all-inclusive package for the convenience and peace of mind?

5. Choose Your Preferred Aesthetic
Maldives resorts vary widely in style. Some are ultra-modern with sleek, glass-heavy villas, while others are traditional with wooden accents and a more rustic charm. Some resorts are small and intimate; others are large with multi-story buildings.
The vibe of the resort often sets the tone for your vacation. Check photos carefully, especially of the room you’ll stay in.
Questions to ask yourself:
- Do I prefer a modern, minimalistic resort or a traditional island experience?
- What kind of atmosphere do I want, and is it reflected in the resort photos?
6. Amenities Matter
Despite what you might expect, not all resorts offer overwater villas! If this is a priority, make sure the resort offers this! Some villas/rooms have private pools, some don’t. The spa offerings and sports facilities may also vary significantly. Thinks about what’s important for your stay (e.g. diving, snorkeling, gyms, tennis courts, or yoga classes) and look for those offerings when browsing the resorts.
If you’re a diver, check whether the resort has a PADI-certified dive school and what kind of dive trips they offer.
Questions to ask yourself:
- Which amenities do I want to use?
- Does the resort have the water sports or diving facilities I want?
Pro tip: Some resorts offer complimentary water sports like kayaking or paddleboarding—perfect if you want adventure without extra cost.

7. Entertainment Options
Resort entertainment ranges from minimal to extensive. Some have live music or themed dinners; others host movie nights or kids’ programs. The resort we chose didn’t have a lot of organised activities, but we didn’t mind this because we prefer quiet evenings anyway. If you like partying or have kids you might want something more active though!
Questions to ask yourself:
- Do I want evening entertainment, or am I happy relaxing?
- Are there kid-friendly activities if I’m traveling with children?
8. Nature & Diving Opportunities
The natural surroundings differ from island to island. Some are lush and green, while others are smaller and drier. The underwater world might also vary from island to island. While a short boatride can take you to a nice reef from any island, a good house reef is more convenient especially if you’re an avid snorkeller. Check reviews to see whether snorkeling is possible right at the resort or if a day trip is required.
Questions to ask yourself:
- Is there a good house reef for snorkeling or diving?
- Do I care about greenery or the size of the island?
Pro tip: Some resorts organize free snorkeling trips if the house reef isn’t great!
Final Thoughts
Choosing a Maldives resort may feel overwhelming at first, but focusing on these key factors makes the process much easier. The good thing though, no matter which resort you pick, your trip will be unforgettable either way!!
If you’re curious, we stayed at the Nala Maldives by Jawakara (formerly Innahura Maldives Resort before their 2025 renovations). We chose this resort primarily because it fit our atmosphere and budget requirements. There is a PADI dive center and free snorkeling trips by boat, but the house reef was disappointing. There was also only one main restaurant, but it looks like this might have changed after the renovation. All in all, we had a wonderful experience here. After the renovation in 2025 they have massively increased their prices – I’m not sure if it’s still worth it at this price point!
