How to Visit the Amalfi Coast on a Budget: 4 Days for Under 500 CHF

The Amalfi Coast is often seen as a luxury destination, in the same league as Monaco or St. Tropez. It’s famous for glamorous beaches, pastel-colored cliffside villages, and celebrity yachts. In this post I’ll show that you don’t need to be a millionaire to visit the Amalfi Coast! My four-day Amalfi Coast trip cost me just under 500 CHF per person (excluding flights). Here’s exactly how I did it and how you can plan your own Amalfi Coast budget getaway.

Before You Go: Important Notes about this budget breakdown

Flight cost excluded

Flights will vary depending on where you’re flying from, so I haven’t included them in this budget. For reference, I flew from Basel to Naples (the closest airport to the Amalfi Coast) for 251 CHF round trip around Easter. Prices will likely be higher in peak summer, but can go even lower in the off-season.

All expenses paid by card

I paid for everything with my Revolut card, which has the best exchange rate fees. If you use another travel card, your costs might be slightly higher.

Costs in CHF (but easy conversion to EUR/USD)

All prices are in Swiss Francs. Luckily, CHF is nearly equal to EUR and USD, so you can use these numbers without converting.

Trip for two

I traveled with my boyfriend, so we split the hotel cost. Everything else in this post should apply to all types of travellers since I indicate the costs below per person.

Trip length

We arrived Thursday evening and left Monday evening, which gave us four nights and four full days on the Amalfi Coast. We were traveling during Easter, so accommodation costs might be higher or comparable to summer prices.

Total Amalfi Coast budget breakdown

Here’s how much we spent per person:

CategoryTotal cost (CHF)% of trip budget
Food17836%
Transport9018%
Hotel17936%
Activities4910%

👉 Grand total: 496 CHF per person (excluding flights)
That’s about 125 CHF per day including accommodation. Let’s break it down further.

Accommodation in Sorrento

Accommodation is usually the biggest expense, and the Amalfi Coast is no exception. But here’s a money-saving tip: stay in Sorrento instead of Positano or Amalfi.

We spent 179 CHF each for four nights in private B&B rooms, which comes out to about 45 CHF per night per person. Both of our guesthouses also included free breakfast — a big budget win 🙂

💡 Pro tip: Sorrento is a great base for day trips to Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, and even Capri and Pompeii.

Food & drinks on the Amalfi Coast

Food costs ended up almost identical to accommodation, about 180 CHF per person for four days. That’s roughly 45 CHF per day.

Here’s the breakdown:

Meal TypeAvg. Cost (CHF)Notes
Lunch25Often in Amalfi Coast towns (Positano, Ravello, Capri), no alcohol
Dinner12Always in Sorrento, cheaper than coastal restaurants, no alcohol
Snacks & drinks16Gelato, Aperol spritz, coffee breaks

Lunch was usually our priciest meal, especially in touristy spots like Positano. Dinners in Sorrento were far more affordable, averaging just 12 CHF without alcohol. Drinks and snacks add up quickly, so keep Aperol spritzes (which were around €10) and gelato in mind when budgeting!

Transportation around the Amalfi Coast

We used public transport, which is by far the cheapest option:

  • Amalfi Coast bus ticket (24h): 10 CHF (unlimited rides)
  • Ferry to Capri (Sorrento–Capri round trip): 40 CHF
  • Naples airport transfer (bus + train): approx. 10 CHF each

In total, transport came to 90 CHF per person for the trip (≈20 CHF per day). Renting a car is also an option, but parking is expensive and roads are stressful. Even though buses can get full, we found that public transport works just fine for budget travelers.

Top 3 Biggest Expenses

Here are the top 3 pricier splurges from my trip:

  1. Hotel: 179 CHF per person for 4 nights in Sorrento (great value compared to Positano).
  2. Ferry to Capri: 40 CHF return, but absolutely worth it
  3. Lunch at Chez Black in Positano: 37 CHF per person. Pricey, but the seaside setting and food are worth it.

Final thoughts: Can you do the Amalfi Coast on a budget?

Yes, absolutely. With smart choices like staying in Sorrento, using buses and ferries, and mixing fancy lunches with budget dinners, we spent under 500 CHF for 4 full days. While this is not “cheap”, it is definitely on the more affordable side for a destination like the Amalfi Coast!

Is the Amalfi Coast Expensive? (FAQs)

💬 Is the Amalfi Coast affordable?
No, but with some smart planning you can make it less expensive! We were able to visit the Amalfi Coast during Easter for approx. for 120–130 CHF per day, including hotels, food, and transport. However, we only ate lunch on the Amalfi Coast and kept alcohol to a minimum. For dinner we went back to our “base” in Sorrento, which is much cheaper!

💬 What’s the cheapest town to stay in?
Sorrento offers the best value while keeping you connected to Positano, Amalfi, and Capri. I’d recommend to stay here!

💬 Can you visit the Amalfi Coast without a car?
Absolutely. Buses, ferries, and trains will take you to all major attractions, and they’re much cheaper than renting a car. Just be prepared that bus lines can get very long, so make sure to start your days early and DON’T RELY ON THE LAST BUS!

💬 How much does a week on the Amalfi Coast cost?
Using my budget as a guide, expect about 875–1,000 CHF for 7 days.
