7 Reasons to Have a Balkan Summer This Year

Everyone seems to be talking about having a “European summer” this year. For most travelers, that means sipping overpriced cocktails on the Amalfi Coast or squeezing through the crowds in Barcelona or Paris. But Europe is so much more than these hotspots. If you’re looking for an affordable, authentic, and still-under-the-radar adventure, here are 7 reasons to plan a Balkan summer instead.

Before We Begin: What Exactly Are the Balkans?

The Balkans aren’t a single country, but a region of geographically close, yet culturally very diverse nations.

Generally these countries are considered part of the Balkans (in alphabetical order):

  • Albania
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Bulgaria
  • Croatia
  • Kosovo
  • Macedonia
  • Montenegro
  • Serbia

Sometimes, depending on who you ask, Greece, Slovenia, and even part of Turkey are also included.

So when we say “Balkan summer,” we’re really talking about an experience across many cultures, cuisines, and landscapes.

7 Reasons to Have a Balkan Summer

1. The Balkans Are One of the Most Affordable European Travel Destinations

Western Europe’s tourist hotspots have gotten very expensive! If you’re traveling on a budget, the Balkans are still one of the most affordable regions in Europe.

Croatia and Greece have gotten pricier, but countries like Macedonia, Albania, and Bosnia are still incredibly budget-friendly. For example, in Macedonia (where I’m originally from), you can enjoy a full 3-course meal for 8–10 CHF. Cocktails? Just 4 CHF. Compare that to Paris or Rome, and your travel budget suddenly stretches much further.

2. The Food in the Balkans is Delicious

Balkan cuisine is a hidden gem. With influences from the Middle East and Turkey, you’ll taste flavors and dishes you won’t easily find at home. And yes—the region is famous for its barbecue!

If you love grilled meats, fresh bread, and hearty portions, you’re in for a treat. Last year, my family of six had a massive barbecue platter with salads and drinks for only €80. Affordable and unforgettable.

Must-try dishes: čevapi (grilled minced meat), burek (savory pastry), and shopska salad (fresh tomato and feta-style cheese salad).

3. A Region Steeped in History

Traveling through the Balkans includes experiencing a lot of history. You’ll come across:

  • Roman ruins, like the ancient Via Egnatia.
  • Ottoman heritage with mosques, hammams, and bazaars.
  • Communist-era architecture from Tito’s Yugoslavia.

Each country tells its own story, reflected in its architecture, food, religion, and culture. If you’re a history lover, the Balkan Peninsula is endlessly fascinating.

4. Nightlife in the Balkans: Belgrade, Montenegro, and Beyond

If nightlife is part of your summer plans, you’ll love the Balkans.

  • Belgrade, Serbia, has become one of Europe’s top party cities, full of clubs and floating river barges that turn into nightclubs.
  • Montenegro offers buzzing beach clubs.
  • Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast is known for big festivals and parties.
  • Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia also has lakeside beach clubs with unforgettable sunsets.

Whether you’re into electronic music, live bands, or cocktails by the water, the Balkan nightlife scene won’t disappoint.

5. Diverse Nature: Mountains, Seas, Lakes, and More

The word Balkan comes from Turkish and means “mountain”—and it fits. The region is filled with rugged mountains, but it doesn’t stop there.

You’ll also find:

  • The Adriatic, Ionian, Aegean, and Black Seas.
  • Stunning lakes like Lake Ohrid (Macedonia).
  • Deep canyons and lush forests.

North Macedonia alone offers mountains, lakes, and charming towns—all within a short drive.

6. Endless Outdoor Activities in the Balkans

With such diverse landscapes, the Balkans are perfect for outdoor lovers. Think:

  • Hiking in National Parks.
  • Kayaking in Matka Canyon near Skopje.
  • Paragliding over coastal towns.

If you’re into adventure travel, the Balkans offer outdoor activities for every skill level and budget.

7. A Unique and Authentic Travel Experience

Last but not least: choosing the Balkans means your summer trip will feel different.

While everyone else floods Italy and Spain, you’ll explore places that still feel authentic. Your Instagram feed won’t look like everyone else’s, and your memories will stand out because fewer tourists have “been there, done that.”

Final Thoughts

Hopefully these 7 reasons have sparked some inspiration for planning your own Balkan summer trip. To me, the Balkans are underrated — offering beauty, culture, and just as much fun as Western Europe, but with fewer crowds and at a fraction of the cost.

So, where would you love to go first: the mountains of Montenegro, the beaches of Albania, or the lakes of North Macedonia? Let me know in the comments!
