1. Kaneo Church, Ohrid
The St. John Kaneo Church is one of the most iconic sights in Macedonia. Located on a cliff overlooking Lake Ohrid, this Macedonian Orthodox church dates back to the 1500s. The surrounding nature and views are perfect for photography and just taking a quiet moment to take it all in.
Fun fact: If you’re visiting in summer, bring a swimsuit! There’s a small beach called “Potpeš” that sits right beneath the church.

- Recommended visiting time: 1 hour, or half/full day if combining with beach time

2. Stone Bridge & Old Town, Skopje
The Stone Bridge over the Vardar River connects modern Skopje with the Old Turkish Bazaar. The Ottoman influence can still be seen today through mosques, hammams, and historic guesthouses.
Highlights in the Old Town:
- Čifte Hamam – now a contemporary art gallery
- Daut Pasha Hamam – National Art Gallery
- Kapan Han, Kuršumli Han, Suli Han – historic guesthouses
- Church of the Holy Salvation – built half-underground with intricate carvings on the inside
- How to get there: Skopje city center is very walkable
- Recommended visiting time: Half a day (or a full day for museums)

3. Matka Canyon, Skopje
Located just outside Skopje, Matka Canyon is my favorite day trip! Hike the trails, rent a boat or kayak, and explore the monasteries hidden in the canyon.
- How to get there: Best by car or taxi. You can negotiate a fixed price with taxis that will take you there and wait for you until it’s time to head back again!
- Recommended visiting time: Full day

4. Vodno Mountain, Skopje
Skopje’s “house mountain” Vodno is home to the massive Millennium Cross. Hiking trails and panoramic views of Skopje and the Vardar River make this a must-visit attraction in Skopje!
- How to get there: Cable car from the lower station, which is reachable by car, taxi or public bus (#25)
- Recommended visiting time: Half a day (or full day for hiking)

5. Trpejca Village, Ohrid
Nestled at the foot of Galičica Mountain along Lake Ohrid, Trpejca is a quaint fishing village known for seafood restaurants and it’s beach. The water is crystal clear in this part of the lake!
- How to get there: Car rental is easiest; taxis and boat charters (from the Ohrid city center) work too
- Recommended visiting time: Half a day (or full day if relaxing by the beach)
6. Monastery of St. Naum, Ohrid
The St. Naum Monastery, founded in 905 AD, sits right on the shore of Lake Ohrid and houses St. Naum’s tomb. In addition, you can also take a boat trip along the nearby St. Naum springs for some beautiful nature scenery.
- How to get there: Car or boat from Ohrid (private or scheduled lines available)
- Recommended visiting time: Full day

7. Galičica National Park, Ohrid
Galičica Mountain, separating Lakes Ohrid and Prespa, is ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and paragliding. You’ll get the best view over both peaks from Magaro Peak.
- How to get there: Accessible only by car (or hiking up from the main road/villages)
- Recommended visiting time: Full day

8. Kruševo
Kruševo, Macedonia’s highest town at 1,350 m, is home to the Ilinden Memorial Complex (Makedonium). The complex commemorates the Ilinden Uprising and Macedonian independence aspirations. The four platforms symbolize the invincibility, the struggle and the eternal aspiration of the Macedonian people for freedom and an independent state.
